Vietnam – Arrest of blogger Truong Duy Nhat (May 27, 2013)

France condemns the arrest of blogger Truong Duy Nhat on 26 May in the city of Danang for “abusing democratic freedoms with acts against the state”.

This arrest follows a series of convictions handed down against rights defenders in Vietnam since autumn 2012, which breach human rights. France notably expressed its concerns after two young Vietnamese, Nguyen Phuong Uyen and Dinh Nguyen Kha, were sentenced to heavy punishments on 16 May. France is particularly attentive to these issues, which are the subject of a dialogue between the European Union and Vietnam.

France recalls its commitment to the worldwide freedom of expression and opinion, including online. It also recalls that these rights and freedoms are guaranteed by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Vietnam is a Party, and calls on the Vietnamese authorities to ensure compliance.
