Two independent Vietnamese organizations, the Former Vietnamese Prisoners of Conscience (FVPOC) and the Vietnamese Women for Human Rights (VNWHR) visited those people who were illegally detained by the police forces in Lap Vo district in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap, and presented gifts worth VND 10 million ($480) for each family of the three citizens who are still in custody.
In morning of March 9, 2014, in Justice & Peace Office, 18 victims detained illegally by the police forces of Lap Vo district in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap met with lawyers Tran Thu Nam and Nguyen Van Mieng.
Earlier on Feb 9, Lap Vo district’s police detained 18 Vietnamese citizens when they were in their way to visit Nguyen Bac Truyen, a local former political prisoner who was also harrased by the local police forces several days earlier,
Ms. Tan and representatives of FVPOC and VHRWA presented a gift for Mr. Minh’s wife
The police released 15 detained but still hold three named Ms. Bui Thi Minh Hang, a land rights activist, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Quynh and Mr. Nguyen Van Minh. All three are reportedly conducting hunger strike to protest the illegal detaining. Their health is in critical conditions.
At the first meeting with the two lawyers, Dang Thi Quynh Anh, the largest daughter of Ms. Hang, asked the lawyers to follow her mother case, according to the agreement previously signed between the lawyers and Ms. Hang when she was still free.
On the same day, in order to support the three citizens still in police’s custody, two unsanctioned Vietnamese organizations, the Former Vietnamese Prisoners of Conscience (FVPOC) and the Vietnamese Women for Human Rights (VNWHR) visited their families and donated gifts worth VND 10 million each.
Ms. Quynh Anh, daughter of Ms. Hang, Ms. Bui Diem Thuy, wife of Mr. Minh, and Ms. Phuong, an officer of the Justice & Peace Office who represented Ms. Quynh’s family, received the gifts.
The three families were very appreciated the sympathy of the FVPOC and the VNWHR, expressing the thankfulness to the two independent organizations as well as donors.
