Mr. Nguyen Tien Trung, for merely suggesting that Vietnam improve its human rights, was convicted in 2010 of plotting to overthrow the Vietnamese government. He was released over the weekend after serving four years of a seven-year sentence and now must now spend the next three years under house arrest.

Prior to his arrest in 2010, Mr. Trung had traveled to the U.S. and had met with President George W. Bush and numerous members of Congress to discuss human rights abuses in Vietnam. Congressman Mike Honda, who was one of the officials who knew Mr. Trung, said, “I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Trung when he was last in the U.S. and was very impressed with his sincerity in improving the human rights conditions in his country. I’m pleased to learn of his release and wish him well.”

The U.S. Department of State has followed Mr. Trung’s case closely and had urged the Government of Vietnam to release Mr. Trung and all other prisoners in detention merely for peacefully expressing their views.

Dr. Ngai Nguyen, Vice Secretary of the Democratic Party of Vietnam, (DPV), said, “We are extremely pleased with the release of Nguyen Tien Trung and welcome him back to the community. We also thank our U.S. Department of State, numerous members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, the media and human rights activists around the world for their continued support during Mr. Trung’s confinement.”
