Police in Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi have granted amnesty to 305 inmates without any activist on the occasion of the Lunar New Year or Tet festival, the largest holiday of the country.

Local police proclaimed the amnesty on Feb 10, giving commuted sentences or release to the prisoners who having light punishments and positive rehabilitation attitudes.

The clemency not only reflects the Government’s leniency policy, but also encourages prisoners to rehabilitate themselves for expedient societal integration, state media said.

Vietnam normally grants amnesty to prisoners on special occasions of Independence Day (Sept 2), Reunification Day (Apr 30) and Lunar New Year (Feb) to reflect the state’s “humane” policy.

Meanwhile, the communist country hardly reduces imprisonments to prisoners for political charges.
