Vietnam Plans to Set up Court to Protect Children: Senior Lawmaker

Vietnam expects to set up a court to deal with issues involving in families and adolescents this year in a bid to promote children protection, a deputy chairman of the National Assembly, the country’s highest legislative body.

The court will cover the issues, such as divorce that involving in children, violating children’ rights, NA’s Deputy Chairman Uong Chu Luu said at a meeting with the participation of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Hanoi on April 2.

The move is part of Vietnam’s effort towards fulfilling its commitments to the protection of children’s rights that it signed in international treaties, he said.

Being the second country in the world to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child 24 years ago, Vietnam is criticized for poor enforcement of international treaties on protecting children’s rights.

Vietnam remains home to 1.4 million disadvantaged children or 5.84% of its population, more than 21,000 street children, 11,000 working far from their houses, 1,400 suffered sexual abuse and 2.6 million children vulnerable to either spiritual or material difficulties.
