A Hanoi-based boy died in a local hospital after receiving a number of severe injuries during police detention in a stealing case, human rights activist Tran Thi Nga said in her Facebook page.

Ms. Nga said on her Facebook page that authorities in Bach Mai Hospital on October 7 requested the family of Do Dang Du, 17, to come to the hospital to attend in his body autopsy.

Du, the boy from Dong Cuu village, Dong Phuong Yen commune, Chuong My district, on August 5 was caught in red hand to steal VND1.5 million ($67) from his neighbor. Although he returned the money to the owner, he was still arrested by the Chuong My district police on the same day.

The boy was said to be transferred to Bach Mai Hospital several days ago for treatment of severe injuries he suffered during police interrogation.

The hospital authorities said Du died on October 7 with the severely injured brain.

Ms. Nga said numerous police officers have blocked Du’s relatives from seeing his body.

Police torture is a systemic problem across Vietnam, according to the New York-based Human Rights Watch while the Ministry of Public Security reported 126 deaths of suspects and prisoners in police detention facilities in the past four years.

The ministry said most of the deaths were caused by suicides and severe diseases, however, families of the victims said the real causes are police torture.

Vietnam ratified the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel Treatments in 2014, however, the police torture has not been prevented. Since the beginning of 2015, nearly ten of individuals died or suffered severe injuries due to police torture, according to state media.
