Police in Ia Pa district in Vietnam’s central highlands province of Gia Lai will conduct an investigation into a case in which the police chief in Ia Trok commune knocked down a local resident in a wedding party, the Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Saturday.

According to Chairman Vo Hung Quang of the communal People’s Committee, Le Tien Phu was ordered by communal policemen to the police station on May 22 when he was attending the wedding party in his village.

Phu protested the order and Pham Thanh Trung, the communal police chief, used tear gas to spray at his face until Phu collapsed.

The video provided by local residents showed that Trung, without police uniform, attacked Phu with tear gas and then handcuffed him.

Earlier, the police received information that Phu caused trouble and quarreled with others in the wedding party.

The police power abuse is rampant in Vietnam, especially in communal level, where policemen have passed limited training. However, Vietnam’s government has sought to give more power to police in communal level while many lawmakers and experts have objected the move.
