My name is Trinh Ba Khiem and I am a victim of injustice in Duong Noi ward, Ha Dong district, Hanoi, Vietnam. Our family needs your help right now.
In 2008, the local government confiscated the land of hundreds of households in Duong Noi, including my family’s land, and compensated them at a very cheap price, so our land was almost robbed.
Since then, my family has fought to keep the land that our ancestors left us. In addition, we also support and have taken part in the struggle for freedom, democracy and human rights in Vietnam along with voicing to protect the environment. Because of our actions, the communist authorities have harassed, beaten and imprisoned four out of five members of my family.
My wife Can Thi Theu, my two sons Trinh Ba Phuong and Trinh Ba Tu, and myself, have been convicted and given six prison sentences with a total of 30 years and two months, and 11 years of probation. Only my daughter has not been imprisoned.
My wife, Can Thi Theu, and I were first arrested in 2014 while filming a video, recording images of the police beating innocent people with batons. And we were each sentenced to 15 months in prison with the false charge of “Resisting a person on official duty.”
My wife was arrested for the second time in 2016 for participating in a peaceful protest demanding the return of our land that had been confiscated by the government. Later, she was sentenced to 20 months in prison on the charge of “Disturbing public order.”
In early January 2020, after the government sent 3,000 riot police to attack Dong Tam village in which they killed local elderly spiritual leader Le Dinh Kinh and arrested many people as well as caused public uproar, my family, including my wife and two sons, were among the pioneers in providing information about the police bloody attack to the domestic and foreign media.
In June 2020, my wife Can Thi Theu and our two sons Trinh Ba Phuong and Trinh Ba Tu were arrested on the vague charge of “conducting anti-state propaganda” under Article 117 of the country’s Criminal Code. My wife and youngest son Trinh Ba Tu were each sentenced to eight years in prison and three years of probation. This was my wife’s third imprisonment. In another trial, Trinh Ba Phuong was sentenced to ten years in prison and five years of probation. All of them were abused, beaten and tortured during their detention. Trinh Ba Phuong was even forcibly sent to a mental hospital.
When Trinh Ba Phuong was arrested, his first son, Bao, was only two years old and the second named Doan was just four days old.
Now I and my daughter and daughter-in-law have to take care of the two kids and make prison visits to provide supplies for my wife and two children who were wrongly imprisoned in three places far from our home.
Currently, my family’s life is very difficult. My wife and two sons were all the main workers in the house before they were arrested.
Today, May 7, my daughter-in-law and I went to visit Trinh Ba Phuong and were informed that he was probed again in prison under Clause 1, Article 117 (making and storing anti-state documents) with a potential imprisonment of between five to 12 years, just because my son wrote the words “Down with Vietnamese CommunistS.”
I am writing this letter urgently to call on the Embassies and Consulates of the democratic countries in Vietnam with hope that you will speak up for my son so that he will not be sentenced again.
The family’s wish is that Trinh Ba Phuong will be granted asylum and his sentence is too long while his wife has to be taking care of their two kids.
We wish to have a direct meeting with you to clarify Trinh Ba Phuong’s case. The meeting can be arranged at your convenience.
