Vietnam President Demands Verification of Child Sex Abuse Case in Vung Tau

by KTT, March 13, 2017

Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang has asked authorized agencies to make clear the case of a girl being sexually abused by an old man in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau.

Under the request, the Ministry of Public Security and the Supreme People’s Procuracy need to ask different agencies to soon investigate the case in which a 77-year-old man was accused of conducting sexual assault of some children at Lakeside apartment block in Vung Tau city.

The demand was made after a lawyer office, which protects the victim, a six-year-old girl, sent a petition to the president on February 21, 2017.

According to the online Phu Nu Viet Nam (Vietnamese Women) newspaper, the victim’s mother named Tran Thi Thu Thuy earlier denounced the man called N.K.T as the one molesting her daughter T.N.T.

In August 2016, local police probed the case under public pressure. But the investigation has been stalled for the over six months as the man was member of the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam and former head of Vietcombank’s local branch.

Relating to the case, in 2014, a foreign man called ViJay  sent a petition to local authorities to denounce Mr. T for sexually assaulting to another girl in a case he witnessed.

Child abuses, especially sexual assaults, remain a thorny issue in Vietnam and victims find it hard to bring their cases to light due to fear of public shaming and lack of support from local authorities.
